Sheet Music Furniture Makeover Tutorial

sheet music furniture diy

Lately, I’ve been obsessed with sheet music crafts. My husband has, literally, BOXES of old, antique sheet music that have just been gathering dust for years. We’ve been working on clearing out our junk spare room to prepare for baby #2, so instead of throwing out all of the old music, I’ve been trying to repurpose it.

So, naturally, I decided to Mod Podge my furniture with it. Makes perfect sense, no?

After googling and Pinterest-ing ideas for sheet music crafts, I came across several different furniture pieces that had been refinished using sheet music. I’ve had this table in my entry way for a few years now, and it’s always just been this kinda plain piece with clean lines. I thought adding the sheet music to it might make it a much more interesting piece, and I am oh-so-pleased with how it turned out!

Since I’m a bad DIY-er, I didn’t take any before pics for your comparison needs. However, just image a plain black drawer and you’ll have the mental image you need.

Here’s what I did for the Sheet Music Furniture Makeover:

1. First, I dusted the whole piece. It’s always wise to start with a clean piece of furniture.

2. Then, I selected my pieces of music and laid them out on the floor in the order I planned to apply them. I cut the pieces that would need to be trimmed down to fit the drawer.

3. Third, I applied a thin layer of Mod Podge and used it to adhere the sheet music one piece at a time. I used a thin layer underneath to serve as a sort of glue/adhesive and to avoid bubbling. And for the most part, I didn’t overlap the music. I experimented by overlapping and not overlapping and found that I preferred the non-overlapping look. Do what feels best for your style.

4. Once I had adhered all of the sheet music, I then applied a liberal amount of Mod Podge over the top to seal it and give it a nice finish. After it dried, I put the knobs back on and voila! My entry table has gone from boring to interesting. At least, it has to me.

What do you think? Have you tried any crafts using sheet music? My next project to tackle with the sheet music is to make a wreath using sheet music paper rosettes. Stay tuned!
